NASEM Clinical Guidance

Coming soon: NASEM PFAS Clinical Guidance Mini Video Series

In the summer of 2022, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) published the first clinical guidance for PFAS exposure in the United States.

The recommended guidance is based on how much of 7 specific PFAS are in a person’s blood sample. The 7 PFAS are:

  • PFOS
  • PFOA
  • PFHxS
  • PFNA
  • PFDA
  • MeFOSAA
  • PFuNDA

We add up how much of these 7 PFAS are in a blood sample to determine which clinical guidelines apply.

It is important to note that while over 12,000 PFAS exist, these recommendations only apply to the 7 PFAS listed above. Also, we have learned a lot about PFAS and health since these recommendations came out in 2022.
